Maple trees at the Battle of Black Jack Park. This is the site of what some historians say was the first battle of the civil war. It took place June 2, 1856, 3 miles East of Baldwin. It was a skirmish between anti-slavery forces led by abolitionist John Brown and pro-slavery forces led by Henry Pate. The battle went in favor of John Brown's group and not a single life was lost.
